The 2026 New River Symposium took place ast April at Appalachian State University. The bi-annual, multi-disciplinary conference is open to anyone with either a professional or an amateur interest in the New River. Among the sessions we attended there was one with three renowned academics who read pieces which really connected the audience with their sense of place. The session was called Writing the Watershed. Rick Van Noy, Zachary Vernon, and our very own Laird Christensen were the panelists. The first presenter was Zachary Vernon. His Eating on a Mountain at the End of the World is a 2026 memoir and food ethics book about his move to Boone, North Carolina to pursue ethical eating, blending personal narrative with long-form journalism as he works on farms, interviews locals, and explores the complexities of sustainable food systems in Appalachia. Published by the University of North Carolina Press, it's part autobiography, part cookbook, and part exploration of the challenges and joys of connecting with food and community.  I grew up eating as if I lived in America as my mother, a psychologist, embraced modernity in our kitchen. It always amazed me to look at my tongue in the mirror and see many colors, depending on what I ate or drank: it could appear purple, green, or red, depending on the Kool Aid colors and flavors. The Knorr’s Maggi soups, the colorful jellies, and the CheezWhiz spread on my white flour crackers provided plenty of artificial coloring and flavorings, like Yellow 5, Blue 5, Green 5, Red 4, and Monosodium Glutamate and, of course, at the top refined sugars and flours. The ingredients were diverse, and some were impossible to articulate. My high school year 1974-1975 in Santa Barbara, California, was enough to make me realize how mistaken my mother was in her kitchen thinking. I have been always interested in the ontology of food. I keep thinking in the relationships of the food we have in the refrigerator and ourselves. I don’t see food as self-contained objects but like a network which links us to sunlight, soil, workers, and transportation. Well, I guess I’m going too far but I loved this reading of Zachary Vernon!

One week ago we attended the closing day of the New River Symposium. The session Tributaria: Poetry, Prose, & Art Inspired by Tributaries of the Ohio River Watershed brought us so much joy. Our first post about this meaningful session featured Jessica Cory’s reading. Most of them read their own poems from the collection and then another contributor's poem. Jessica also read Melissa Helton's poem and then hers. Jim read his whole essay, so he didn't read anyone else's work. A memorable session, Tributaria: poetry, Prose, & Art Inspired by Tributaries of the Ohio River Watershed. Our first post features the editor of Appalachian Journal, Jessica Cory. She was one of the poets of this anthology Tributaria: poetry, Prose, & Art Inspired by Tributaries of the Ohio River Watershed. Jim Minick convened the session. Our poet laureate Joseph Bathanti, Donna Dzurilla, Pam Campbell, and Jim Minick, who also convened this session which saw the light last Friday at the New River Symposium.

Desde mañana y por dos días, 9 y 10 de abril, estaremos tomando parte en un importante simposio sobre el New River en Appalachian State University. ¡Estamos entusiasmados porque cada año esperamos el verano para flotar en sus aguas, pero estamos conscientes de que hay que cuidarlo mucho porque ya se han encontrado microplásticos en sus cabeceras.
